When it comes to designing AR apps, designers face a slew of obstacles, one of which is the creation of new mental models. We build models based on our previous experiences: books we’ve read, movies we’ve seen, and discussions we’ve had. In a similar way, we create mental models of software. Google aids in the formation of the search mental model. Similarly, Amazon handles e-commerce, eBay handles auctions, Twitter handles microblogging, and Microsoft Excel handles spreadsheets. But what about AR? The models are still being developed.

LEVERAGING EXISTING MENTAL MODELS

The mental models of analog photography — the simulation of a viewfinder, the display of a filmstrip, the flash of a bulb, and the sound of a shutter – were used to expedite the digital photographic revolution. To introduce users to augmented reality, we may find that digital photography is the best and most accurate mental model. We rely on technology to collect and display what we see while shooting a shot. When we use augmented reality, we rely on a device to capture and alter our surroundings.
The wireframes for a home and garden app are shown below. (The client’s name has been changed.) You’ll note that the app uses digital photography norms. The standards let users get a feel for the new app’s user interface, which includes the ability to save a still image from within the AR visualization.
